- (Drenthe) Attested as Nie Echten in 1634. Univerbation of hoog + veen. The settlement was initially called Nieuw Echten ("New Echten"). See also Dutch Low Saxon 't Ogeveine, 't Oveine, 't Hogeveine.
- (Zuid-Holland) Compound of hoog (“high, elevated”) and veen (“peat bog, marsh”). Formerly an independent hamlet.
