Etymology edit

Potentially attested as petthe in 1141, attested with certainty as in petthe in 1217. Perhaps derived from a collectivised form of Proto-Germanic *paþa- (mud, swamp) or from Old Dutch pad (path, narrow road). Compare Paddepoel, Padhuis and Peize.
