From Late Latin Iācōbus, from Ancient Greek Ἰάκωβος (Iákōbos), from Hebrew יעקב (ya'aqóbh; Modern: Yaakov, Jacob, literally he will/shall heel), from עקב (‘aqev, heel of the foot).
