From different origins. In Eastern Finland, from vernacular forms of Ancient Greek Νικόλαος (Nikólaos), an Eastern Orthodox name. In Ostrobothnia, from Swedish kol (“coal”). in Tavastia, possibly a back-formation from an oblique stem of kota (standard kodan, but dialectal kolan).[1]
