From Spanish Maguindánao, from Maguindanao Magindanaw, from a blend of maginged (“resident”) + danaw (“lake”). Compare Ilocano danaw, Cebuano danaw, Maguindanao lanaw, Maranao ranaw, Malay danau, English Lanao, English Maranao, English Iranun. Generally translated to "people of the flood" or "people of the lake".
