  1. (archaic, taxonomy) The taxonomic category for all non-life; that which is not life is a mineral.

Usage notes edit

In the past, the world was divided into animal, vegetable and mineral. The animals (fauna) and vegetables (flora) were alive, while the minerals were not. The alive were also categorized as Vitae.
