From Russian Не́ман (Néman), from Lithuanian Nemunas, of uncertain origin, possibly from an Old Lithuanian word meaning "damp, wet" (Proto-Indo-European *ned- (wet), sharing Ancient Greek νοτερός (noterós)), or from nemti (to become silent), or from Finnic niemi (cape).
