Etymology edit

Calque of German Neues Reich, eventually displacing New Empire, an older calque of the same term. Coined in the 1840s as part of a periodization of Ancient Egyptian history into Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms.

  1. (historical, Egyptology) Egypt after the Second Intermediate Period but before the Third Intermediate Period, from the time of the overthrow of the Hyksos under Ahmose I at the start of the 18th Dynasty to its de facto disintegration at the end of the 20th Dynasty.
