Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 觀音, composed of 觀 (“to view”) and 音 (“sound”), from Literary Chinese 觀音 (Guānyīn, literally “to look at the sound”), calqued from Sanskrit अवलोकितस्वर (avalokitasvara, literally “Who Looks at the Sound”).
