Unknown. Possibly a borrowing from Proto-Germanic *felu (compare German viel, Gothic 𐍆𐌹𐌻𐌿 (filu)), a borrowing from Proto-Slavic *boľьjь or an inherited word from Proto-Uralic *paljɜ (compare Eastern Mari [script needed] (pülä), Eastern Mansi [script needed] (pőĺ), Tundra Nenets [script needed] (paĺ)). None of the aforementioned theories is certain.
