From Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (“shiny; bright; gleaming; white”). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *bělъ (“white”), Lithuanian bãlas, báltas (“white”), Latvian balts (“white”), Ancient Greek φαλός (phalós, “white”), Sanskrit भाल (bhāla, “splendour”).
