From Pre-Germanic *ǵʰĺ̥h₃tom (gold), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃- (yellow; gleam; to shine). Compare Proto-Slavic *zolto, Proto-Baltic *želtas, whence Latvian zelts. Disputed relation to *geldaną (to pay).
