From Proto-Indo-European *lewH- (to untie, set free, separate). Related to *leusaną; outside of Germanic, related to Ancient Greek λύω (lúō), Latin luō (expiate, pay), Sanskrit लून (lūna, sever, cut forth, destroy, annihilate), and possibly Old Armenian լուծանեմ (lucanem) and Albanian lirë.
