From Pre-Germanic *Hrēh₃dis, a long-grade verbal adjective derived to a lost strong verb *rōtaną, from Proto-Indo-European *Hreh₃d-. Related to Latin rōdō (to gnaw) and Sanskrit रदति (radati, to dig).
