Probably from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gjaupāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *gewp-eh₂, from *gewp-, an extension of *gew-. Compare Proto-Germanic *kubô (hut, cove), Ancient Greek γῡ́πη (gū́pē, den, cavity).

Etymology 2 edit

Not entirely clear. Has been compared with Old English ġēap (broad, spacious), Lithuanian gaubti (to cover).
