Proto-Slavic edit

Etymology edit

From an earlier **obvьlъ with regular assimilation -bv- > -bb- > -b-, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *apwilas (0-grade) ~ *apwalus (o-grade), from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (to roll, to wind). Cognate with Latvian apaļš (round), Lithuanian apvalùs (round). For the loss of -v- between ob- and a vowel compare *obolkъ which comes from an earlier **obvolkъ.
