Formed from an earlier *pozdъ +‎ *-ьnъ (compared Old East Slavic поздъ (pozdŭ), dialectal Russian по́здый (pózdyj), поздо́й (pozdój, late)), from Proto-Indo-European *pós. Akin to Latin post.
