Inherited from Proto-Germanic *balwōną. Equivalent to *balu (evil, misfortune) +‎ *-ōn or *balu (evil, bad) +‎ *-ōn. Cognate with Old Norse bǫlva.
Compare also the class 1 weak verb in Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌻𐍅𐌾𐌰𐌽 (balwjan).
