Proto-West Germanic edit

Etymology edit

Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Germanic *hwahtlǭ, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷóǵ⁽ʰ⁾-tl-eh₂, from *kʷeǵ⁽ʰ⁾- (to flee), cognate with Latin quaccola (quail), cocturnīx, cōturnīx (quail). Perhaps related to Old Norse *hvekka (to be startled), Latin conquinīscō (to crouch down), Proto-Slavic *čeznǫti (to disappear). Apparently reborrowed from Latin as *kwattulā.
