Etymology edit

First attested as scarle in 1412. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian schar (“share in communal land”), schaar (“land next to water, bank”) or skerne (“manure”) and lo (“light forest”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier variant of the Frisian name.
