Etymology edit

From Latin Suittes (attested 972), perhaps from the Old High German verb swīdan (to burn), referring to a spot cleared by slash-and-burn, from Proto-West Germanic *swīþan; compare Old Norse svíða (to burn, singe).

In the High Middle Ages recorded as Swiz or Switz, by the late 15th to early 16th century as Schwitz or Schwytz. The territory of Schwyz (the later canton) is recorded in Middle Latin as vallis de Switz (valley of Schwyz) from circa 1300 (Federal Charter).
