Borrowed from Latin Terentius. Itself borrowed from latin goddess Terensis, a goddess who presided over the threshing of wheat. Ultimately from Latin terō linked to the technic to separate cobs and seeds of wheat. Cognate with ancient greek τέρην, to make soft.
