- Some trace this to Latin tempora (“time”), from “quattuor tempora” (Ember days), while others trace this to Portuguese tempero (“spice”). I don’t know if there is any consensus; references welcome.

- Who is "some"? The Japanese language did not have any contact with Latin, so the claim is rather ridiculous in the first place. In any case, the first four references at hand say Portuguese: 日本国語大辞典, 大辞林, 大辞泉, and 明鏡. This also fits chronologically with early citations and the Portuguese arrival. No doubt that the Portuguese word has an etymology, but that is not relevant here. Bendono 04:55, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
