Racial slur vs. ethnic slur edit

Is the noun really a racial slur and the adjective really an ethnic one? It seems like they should either both be racial slurs or both ethnic ones. —RuakhTALK 19:19, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pejorative edit

Is this really exclusively offensive? It's just a shorter word from where I stand, like "Brit". Should it not say "potentially offensive" or "often offensive"?LaFoiblesse 18:02, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

See [1]. Was just a shortening, and isn't quite always used pejoratively of course, these things often vary with context. Robert Ullmann 18:34, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Derogatory in the United States edit

the term isn't considered offensive outside of the US, so perhaps the article should say "offensive in US" or something?

It is certainly offensive in the UK. Equinox 17:03, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
In the UK, no it's "certainly" not... it's either neutral or negative depending on the context, something equivalent to the word 'Jew'. For example "my father's a Jap" could be used and also "I love Jap cars". But "those bleedin' Japs, never trust them!" is obviously derogatory. 88.107.190.14 15:58, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
