John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) defines ballast as "money" and adds: "A rich man is said to be well-ballasted. If not proud and over-bearing he is said to carry his ballast well." Finding citations is difficult. Equinox ◑ 21:58, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
