In my experience meaning 4. is British English while 5. is American English. This is especially true when referring to the use of both as mathematical grouping symbols. I think so too. I call ( ) brackets, and I was surprised that people online seem to call them "parentheses". That name sounds very strange to me. —CodeCat 17:29, 20 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
