Domination or management of others edit

Control meaning domination or management of others behavior is missing from the list -- e.g., "hierarchical control within the organization"

In the Hebrew translation of "control" (verb), I changed "שליטה" ("shlit'a" - act of controlling, a noun) with "לשלוט" ("lishlot'" - to control, a verb). Liso 14:09, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Missing uncountable noun or proper noun? edit

How about as a name for ground control, mission control, etc., used for example on the radio? "OK Control - this is Rock Creek, go ahead." Equinox 13:35, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Rfv-sense: A duplicate book, register, or account, kept to correct or check another account or register. OED shares my doubts, and gets paid to research this kind of stuff Notusbutthem (talk) 20:49, 5 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

I am absolutely flabbergasted that the OED has any doubts whatsoever! Just look up ‘control account’ on GoogleBooks to find many such uses[1]. In fact I’d say that our ‘clearly widespread use’ rule covers it, though I could go through the tedious process of finding quotes if needed. To record credit sales, you Cr Sales (and perhaps VAT) and Dr SLCA (the ‘sales ledger control’ or ‘(sales) receivables’ account). Similar standard calculations exist for the PLCA (‘purchase ledger control account’ or ‘(sales) payables’ account) and the Wages Control account (which is written off against the Wages Expense account). Easily cited. Indeed, this is the original meaning of ‘control’ as spelt out by the etymology of the word. The following non-exhaustive list contains instances where ‘control’ is used with this meaning without it being followed by ‘account’: [2],[3],[4] (is case there is any doubt whatsoever).Overlordnat1 (talk) 11:34, 10 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
