We don't really have a policy on whether hyphens split words. But I would say that if it were seen as a single set word, the hyphens would not be necessary. --WikiTiki89 09:43, 20 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
You might have a point. The double hyphen framework is notorious for invention. It might have to be as common as gramophone before it ceases to be a compound. But even when they can be compressed, these intermediary vowels tend to survive with the two hyphens: ice-o-matic, rent-a-cop, truth-o-meter, smell-o-vision, smell-o-rama...
