RFV the definition "Something that is obvious or apparent". (If it exists, we may in fact wish to split this line into two senses.) Mihia (talk) 19:48, 28 August 2021 (UTC)

- Hmmm, thanks as usual for looking at this, but I'm not convinced that any of these support the sense "Something that is obvious or apparent". To me, they all seem to be examples of "something that reveals a secret" that just happen to also be obvious or apparent. We could equally well find examples of tiny or subtle "giveaways" that are hard to spot. Mihia (talk) 19:57, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
- If you will notice, I tweaked the definition. It is not always a secret that is revealed. I found other dictionaries that give the "something obvious" definition, and by their examples, it was an indicator that makes something obvious. Kiwima (talk) 21:00, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
- I see ... when you marked this RFV cited, I assumed you meant you had cited the challenged sense. Would it not be more accurate to mark it failed, since the challenged sense no longer exists? Mihia (talk) 17:25, 30 August 2021 (UTC)
- If you want to think of it as failed, that is fine with me. However, I am more inclined to think of it as an RFV-resolved. The editor who originally added the "obvious or apparent" phrase to the definition clearly did not see it as a separate meaning from the "reveals a secret" meaning. That makes me think it is more a matter of a less than optimal wording of a definition, rather than something that is out-and-out in error. I have tweaked the definition to get at what I assume was the original intent. Kiwima (talk) 21:43, 30 August 2021 (UTC)
- It could have been a miswritten definition. I must say, I am not a huge fan of the definition as it now reads, "An indicator that makes something obvious or apparent; something that reveals a secret or something that is not otherwise apparent".
