Is Jamaican a language? SemperBlotto 08:45, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Also (deprecated template usage) Jumiekan

Looks like Jamaican Creole. Which we don't have an entry on, amusingly. -- Liliana 09:43, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
{{jam}}, I have some family over in Jamaica, I've also seen a play in Jamaican Creole and English and it's really hard to understand! Probably does merit a separate language header as opposed to something like {{context|Jamaica}}. I think the local name for it is just Patois. Mglovesfun (talk) 12:17, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

'Patois' is the correct name for the local language (discounting dialects). 'Jamaican' is not a language, per se, but to a foreigner, it can be understood as something of an accent.Wikimedian 15:11, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Detagged because the dispute seemed to be over the language name only, and "gyal + girl" gets many usable hits on Google Books. - -sche (discuss) 03:55, 1 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

pronunciation edit

Borrowed? edit

Instead of a "pronunciation spelling", isn't this simply (re-)borrowed from Jamaican Creole (via MLE)? @DentoniusJberkel 17:17, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Jberkel, I think it depends. It could be the way somebody pronounces girl, or gal who's not necessarily a Jamaican Creole speaker. I'd leave the label alone (for English, I mean). -- Dentonius (my politics | talk) 17:23, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
The two cites we have are both from MLE, which could be a coincidence. On the other hand, gyal is listed on Multicultural London English § Nouns. – Jberkel 17:42, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
