Mostly Obsolete? This is incorrect, Ma'am is in constant use in at least one UK TV police show which I know of — This comment was unsigned.
- In language, obsolete means that most people wouldn't understand it, clearly false for this word. It might be a bit dated. It might be that. I haven't seen anything to support it being more dated in the UK than in the US. DCDuring TALK 21:14, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Military edit
Some mention of the use of the term in military settings would be appropriate. Ma'am is the equivalent of Sir. It is is used whenever addressing a superior officer of female gender.
Prostitution edit
How about the use of "Madam" as the matron of a house of prostitution? Is it appropriate to use the contraction in this case? 75.163.210.48 03:31, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
- You don't address those women as "ma'am" or "madam". They are just called "madams" as a noun. "Ma'am" is only a term of address; you can't say that somebody is "a ma'am". Equinox ◑ 03:35, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
