I'm not confident enough to change the page, I haven't used this site before, but I am almost certain that "drunkardly sentimental" is almost always part of the definition for maudlin. If someone sees fit... 123.51.101.245 01:20, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

deeper etymology needed edit

portrayals and statues of the Magdalene may have typically been weeping but that's not the origin of this meaning. The origin is the theatricals of [w:Magdelene College]], Cambridge, whose theatricals were always overacted in the extreme, with arch emotion and lampoon-style emotionality; that may be in the college's article which is why I've linked it.

It doesn't sound very plausible- do you have any references? Chuck Entz (talk) 08:10, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
