out of the 100 people invited to the Christmas party, 85 percent (i.e. 85 people) were dancing in their underwear, drunk as can be, when the clock struck midnight. I think this example is a bit too frivolous for this kind of word (which is not frivolous at all) -- Poszwa 19:21, 18 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I tend to agree with you. I also had some doubts when I saw this being put in. Feel free to put in a better example. Polyglot 23:14, 18 Jan 2004 (UTC)

any example of the invariable plural? --Backinstadiums (talk) 18:44, 5 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

The editor probably intended something like "Of the shareholders, 90 percent were present at the meeting." I think this invariant plural is a misinterpretation, though. "90 percent" doesn't mean 90 of the things each called a percent, but is more like other "per" phrases, e.g. two miles per hour. Equinox 19:02, 5 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Equinox: Garner's fourth edition reads: The plural of percent is percent; adding an -s, though not uncommon, is substandard. --Backinstadiums (talk) 19:37, 5 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
I would like to see some examples from Garner. Unclear what sort of sentence they mean. Equinox 20:38, 5 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
