No mention of the Oxford origins by anyone, eh? Oxford students had a penchant for nicknaming things by ending them with -er (e.g. Rugger). This was gone into at some length by Rory McGrath on Balderdash and Piffle (BBC) in his diatribe against the term - it is largely hated here in the UK, and derided as the US/Australian name for Football.--Amedeofelix 14:59, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

We never say "fudbal" in Croatian, only "nogomet", and I've deleted that line from the part of the article regarding translations.

Etymology's claim of vulgar connotations of "ass"

Why is that relevant? The word was coined in Britain, as stated, and British English has "arse", not "ass" (which means donkey). Should that note be removed? Equinox ◑ 15:53, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
