Rfv-sense: a hole in socks. DCDuring TALK 12:55, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm. A hole in your socks is definitely a potato (in the UK). I've never actually heard it called a spud. SemperBlotto 14:46, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- I'm glad I didn't speedy it. DCDuring TALK 15:00, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- Cited. Plus one with "spud-hole." One 1980 source said the usage was dying out, and suggested a connection with people walking around with a potato in their sock, as a cure for rheumatism. Pingku 15:48, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- Could you tell if it was UK usage or more general? DCDuring TALK 17:53, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- Cassell's Dict of Slang has it, without geographic restriction, as from late 19th C. DCDuring TALK 18:07, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- The source I mentioned is The Muvver Tongue, by w:Robert Barltrop and Jim Wolveridge. See [1] (assuming these links work). Pingku 20:48, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Etymology og spud (potato) edit
Recently I've read that the word spud with the sense potato is basically an acronym of "Society for Prevention of Unhealthy Diet" S.P.U.D. - I don't know whether this is true or not, but if so this should be mentioned in the etymology section.--91.61.119.103 23:06, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
- Not true. Equinox ◑ 23:06, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
Affectionate term edit
I saw a picture of a rat titled "my little spud". Would this be a continuation of sense 4? The rat is not particularly potato-looking apart from being stoutish.--Simplificationalizer (talk) 01:03, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
