tell edit

Rfd-redundant: poker sense of noun. I believe that, whether or not the noun sense originated among poker or other card players, it is now used more widely, as in the psychology of lying and bluffing or, more generally, body language. DCDuring TALK 19:21, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Delete. Clearly the same thing. Perhaps a usage note or expanding the first def would help.--Dmol 22:44, 18 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

another meaning edit

In the phrase "He can't tell wrong from right" I guess tell takes the meaning of differentiate. Should this entry be considered too?

intransitive verb: reveal a secret edit

to reveal secret or damaging information, especially to an authority
Don't worry - I won't tell.

Microsoft® Encarta® 2009 only marks it as intransitive --Backinstadiums (talk) 11:18, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

It seems our sense 11 is a subsense of this. Equinox 12:30, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Equinox: having only subsense(s) is a lexicographical failure --Backinstadiums (talk) 16:12, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
I know. It was an observation. You make too many posts for me to fix every entry. Equinox 18:15, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

"telling" as NATO jargon edit

It feels like a subsense at best, but this is listed in various sources, e.g. Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms (1986): "(NATO) The process of communicating air surveillance and tactical data information between command and control systems or between facilities within systems." Usage example from Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms (1989), page 375: "This type of telling is appropriate between automated facilities in a degraded communications environment."
