I think you are way off in this page understanding the old Norwegian (norse/scandinavian) word tuft and the viking influence of the English language. Tuft (toft etc.) means then base/fundament where you place/build your house. Or the fundaments you left where the house was built. That is why you find places in England and Ireland named Tuft and families from this places still using the name Tuft. Ref. Tuft University in the US. Asle Tuft living in Norway.
