Similarity edit

I fail to see a marked difference between several of these definitions. DAVilla 04:33, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree. I'd merge the first and last noun senses, except that the translations differ, for some reason! Equinox 07:21, 24 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Definitions 1 and 3 edit

Would it be worth noting that definitions 1 and 3 only apply to the old meaning of 'vain' (namely 'futile'), not the current meaning of 'vain' ('narcissitic').

As in the famous 'vanity, vanity, all is vanity' (ie. 'purposeless, pointless, everything is futile') - the start of Ecclesiastes.
