All babel templates

No, the extension replaces all of them. We should probably keep the main {{Babel}} since it's used so much, and just run it through #babel. --Yair rand 21:00, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Oh neat! We might have some custom language templates that aren't covered by default, but the common ones appear to be redundant (unless some have special wordings we want to keep). Would we just auto convert everyone's user page? --Bequw → τ 01:33, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

How exactly would it work, though? Where is the text that appears on the templates kept? Can it be changed? Can new languages be added if necessary (for example Old High German)? —CodeCat 10:33, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

I just deleted {{User xno-1}} to see what would happen. It changes the font and reverts to a basic "This user has basic knowledge of Anglo-Norman." so it removes the native language. So I oppose this deletion as we will lose valuable information. --Mglovesfun (talk) 11:03, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

• I'm confused. I experimented by adding sc-0 to my babel box (expecting something like "This user does not speak Sardinian") and got a red link to {{User sc-0}}. I've left it in place. SemperBlotto 15:16, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

      • OK, I eventually understand. You have to change the format of your babel box to {{#babel: en|it-3|fr-2|la-1|vec-0|sc-0}} (for instance) for it to work. SemperBlotto 15:43, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
• To clarify: The proposal is to change the {{babel}} template to use the #babel: function, and then delete the redundant templates. The #babel: function uses the Template:User xx (this includes script templates such as {{User Latn}}) if it exists, and only otherwise defaults to the built-in contents. The babel box translations are from http://translatewiki.net and are shared across projects so that we don't have to duplicate translations on every wiki. In situations where the translation is not available, the function uses English wording instead. At the moment, there are languages for which we have babel templates but the central list does not yet have the translations into that language. In those cases, it would make sense to keep the Wiktionary template until the translation is added at translatewiki. --Yair rand 08:13, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

It seems that if there's a local template is overrides the default template. So there's no real advantage to deleting them, all we would really achieve is losing power over our own templates. Keep. Mglovesfun (talk) 10:42, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Hm? How would we lose power over our own templates? If for whatever reason (though I can't see what that reason would be) someone wants to change what's used here, they could re-create whatever template it is, using whatever modified wording they want, and it would override the default. --Yair rand 22:19, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Seems so. I tried the Babel extension with de-5 (which we don't have), and it does call me a girl. -- Liliana • 20:06, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

We know that all templates aren't 'redundant', so I certainly oppose deleting all of them, including the ones which aren't redundant. Perhaps there are some individual cases that can be deleted. Mglovesfun (talk) 21:34, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
