Etymology edit

First attested as kercwere in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Tsjerkwert, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian tzercka (church) and werve (artificial mound used for habitation). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to wert (artificial mound used for habitation).
