Hi there. According to the "Oxford Dictionary of Music":-
- Low‐register female voice, usually referred to as contralto.
- High type of falsetto male voice, equivalent in compass to female contralto.
- Applied to instruments, the 2nd or 3rd highest of the family, e.g. alto clarinet.
