Hi there. According to the "Oxford Dictionary of Music":-

  • Low‐register female voice, usually referred to as contralto.
  • High type of falsetto male voice, equivalent in compass to female contralto.
  • Applied to instruments, the 2nd or 3rd highest of the family, e.g. alto clarinet.
