Etymology edit

First attested as in vehchele in the first quarter of the 13th century. Potentially derived from dialectal vechel (layer of gravel just below and on the surface of the soil). Earlier etymologies proposed derivations from a compound of Middle Dutch vigge (young pig) or a term derived from Proto-Germanic *fehu (cattle) and lo (light forest).
