Adverbs enging in -ly edit

In most other dictionaries most of the adverbs formed by adding "-ly" to an adjective (eg, belatedly, quickly, encouragingly, heatedly) do not have full separate entries or even definitions. They appear without explicit definition at the entry for the adjective from which they are derived. In some cases, this is not adequate for users. Wiktionary attempts to have fuller entries for some of these adverbs.

Many adverbs formed by adding -ly (or -ally) to an adjective ("X") are defined "In an X manner". This is an adequate definition for the adverb's use when modifying a verb and in some other situations. It is rarely satisfactory in situations where it modifies an adjective or a sentence and not always satisfactory in other situations. Consider whether the adverb being defined is used to modify adjectives, other adverbs, prepositional phrases, and clauses or sentences. If the "manner" definition is not satisfactory, add another definition or insert {{rfdef}} or {{rfc-sense}}.

One strategy for generating alternative definitions is to use other related terms. From example, the definition of adverbially "In an adverbial manner" was recast as "As, or in the manner of, an adverb".
