  1. (zoology, archaic) An extensive, artificial, and heterogeneous group of animals, formerly adopted by many zoologists, which included the coelenterates, echinoderms, sponges, Bryozoa, Protozoa, etc; sometimes restricted to the Coelenterata or to the Anthozoa.
