From Vulgar Latin *aiūnō or *adiūnō, from Late Latin iēiūnō, from Latin iēiūnus. Compare Romanian ajuna, ajun, Spanish ayunar, French jeûner, Italian digiunare. Cf. also Albanian agjëroj, agjinoj.
