From Latin antīcus, variant form of antīquus, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éntih₃kʷós (appearing before; having prior aspect), derived from the roots *h₂énti (locative singular of *h₂ent- (front, front side)) + *h₃ekʷ- (eye; to see).
