A loanword of debated origin:[1]
- Borrowed from Serbo-Croatian or Slovene opat (“abbot”).
- Borrowed from Old High German abbat (“abbot”), from Latin abbas (“father”), from Ancient Greek ἀββᾶς (abbâs)
In both cases, ultimately from Aramaic אבא (’abbā, “father”).
