Etymology edit
Inherited from Old French basoche, besoiche, from Latin basilica, from Ancient Greek βασιλική (basilikḗ). The phonetic evolution was special in this case, as the expected result would be *baseuche (cf. the place name La Bazeuge). Doublet of the borrowing basilique.
