bishtajë
Albanian edit
Etymology edit
Uncertain, but cognate to Romanian păstaie (“pod”), Aromanian pãstalji (“pod”):
- Possibly borrowed from Vulgar Latin *pī̆stālia (whence also the (A)Romanian words), from Late Latin pī̆stāre (“to pound”), frequentative of Latin pīnsāre (“to stamp, pound, crush”),[1] but this is semantically questionable.
- An alternative proposal is from bisht (“tail”) + -ajë.[2]
- Finally, may be of the same Iranian origin as Latin pistacium (“pistacchio”), Ancient Greek πιστάκιον (pistákion), βιστάκιον (bistákion), Persian بسته (boste, “nut”), Sanskrit बुस्त (busta, “husk or shell of fruit”).
