Alteration of bramar, a Germanic borrowing, from Frankish *brammjan or Gothic *𐌱𐍂𐌰𐌼𐌾𐌰𐌽 (*bramjan), both from Proto-Germanic *bramjaną. Compare Italian bramare (“to yearn for”).
